FreeNAS is an open source network-attached storage (NAS)  and can be installed on virtual machines or in physical machines to share data storage via a computer network. FreeNAS supports Linux, Windows and OS X and virtualization hosts  VMware and XenServer.

If you want to set up free shared storage so you can go with FreeNAS. FreeNAS software can be downloaded at no cost from the official website.

It supports iSCSI and Files Transfer Protocol for block storage or CIFS/SMB and all well-known virtualization platforms.
